How to Build a Solarwinds Dashboard for Historical Memory Usage for Power BI
In this article, we will be showing how to examine the historical memory usage from a SolarWinds server. This dashboard will be constructed in Power BI, and we’ll be showing off Power BI’s filtering and drill-down capabilities.

Step 1: To begin, select a multidimensional database (MDB)
Step 2: Select a cube. We’ll use the ‘NPM’ cube
Step 3: Select the ‘OK’ button
Step 4: Select the search bar and type in ‘memory’
Step 5: Select ‘Percentage of Memory Used’
Step 6: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘month’
Step 7: Select the ‘Month’ option
Step 8: Select the ‘X’ button to delete the ‘Year’ option from the chart
Step 9: Now do the same thing by selecting the ‘X’ button next to ‘Quarter’
Step 10: Drag the corners and resize the chart to make it easier to see
Step 11: Select the ‘Treemap’ option from under ‘Visualizations’
Step 12: We’re also going to rearrange and resize the Treemap
Step 13: Select the search field, delete the last query, and then type in ‘memory used’
Step 14: Select the ‘Memory Used Poll Count’ field
Step 15: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘hierarchy – machine’
Step 16: Select the ‘Hierarchy – Machine’ field
Step 17: Select the ‘X’ button to delete the ‘Vendor’ option from the chart
Step 18: By selecting one of the machine types from the treemap, we can see that type’s percentage of memory usage compared to the to the total in the bar chart
Step 19: Now we can see the comparison in the chart. Selecting the same part of the Treemap again will return the report to normal
Step 20: Select the ‘Table’ option from under ‘Visualizations’
Step 21: Select the ‘Hierarchy – Machine’ field to add it to the table
Step 22: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘Site Group’
Step 23: Select the ‘Site Group’ option to add it to the table
Step 24: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘interface speed’
Step 25: Select the ‘Interface Speed’ field
Step 26: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘interface type’
Step 27: Select the ‘Interface Type’ field
Step 28: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘interface id’
Step 29: Select the ‘Interface ID’ field to add it to the chart
Step 30: Select the chart again and move it to make room for slicers
Step 31: Select the ‘Slicer’ option from under ‘Visualizations’
Step 32: Resize the slicer by selecting the corners
Step 33: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘year’
Step 34: Select the ‘Year’ field to add it to the slicer
Step 35: Select the arrow titled to ‘Select the type of slicer’
Step 36: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option
Step 37: Select the dropdown arrow next to ‘All’
Step 38: Select the year you want to examine. We’ll use ‘Calendar 2014’
Step 39: Select the ‘Slicer’ again from under ‘Visualizations’
Step 40: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘vendor’
Step 41: Select the ‘Vendor’ field to add it to the second slicer
Step 42: Select the arrow at the top of the page
Step 43: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option
Step 44: Select a filter option. We’ll filter by the ‘Cisco’ vendor
Step 45: Now we’ve finished out SolarWinds report, and we can use the slicers to filter, as well the Treemap to bring specific machine types into focus
