How To Build A Gantt Chart In PowerBI, Using the Northcraft Analytical App for ServiceNow ITBM


In this article, we will build a report for the ServiceNow ITBM product. We’ll be going through the creation of some bar charts and a Gantt chart to illustrate the product.

Or you can follow these steps:

Step 1: Connect to a multidimensional database (MDB)

Step 2: Select the ‘PPM – Project’ cube

Step 3: Select the ‘OK’ button

Step 4: Select the ‘Show/hide pane’ arrow to close the ‘Filters’ pane

Step 5: Select the ‘Slicer’ from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 6: Select the search bar and type in ‘project short name’

Step 7: Select the ‘Project Short Name’ field

Step 8: Select the arrow to open the ‘Filters’ pane again

Step 9: Select the ‘Expand’ arrow for the ‘Project Short Name’ filter

Step 10: Select the search bar and type in ‘2018 Accounting Work Request’

Step 11: Select the ‘Show/hide pane’ arrow to close the ‘Filters’ pane again

Step 12: Select the edges of a visualization to resize it and click and drag to move it around the space of the report. We’ll be rearranging the visualizations in between steps from this point forward

Step 13: Select the ‘Clustered column chart’ from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 14: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘project cost baseline’

Step 15: Click and hold the ‘Project Cost Baseline’ field

Step 16: Drag it over to the ‘Value’ section

Step 17: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘project cost estimated’

Step 18: Click and hold on the ‘Project Cost Estimated’ field

Step 19: Drag it over to the ‘Value’ field

Step 20: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘project cost actual’

Step 21: Click and hold on the ‘Project Cost Actual’ field

Step 22: Drag it over to the ‘Value’ section

Step 23: Select the paint-roller icon to go to the ‘Format’ section for the chart

Step 24: Select the ‘Data labels’ switch to change it from ‘Off’ to ‘On’

Step 25: Select another ‘Clustered column chart’

Step 26: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘project effort forecast days’

Step 27: Click and hold on the ‘Project Effort Forecast Days’

Step 28: Drag it over to the ‘Value’ section

Step 29: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘hours allocated total’

Step 30: Click and hold on the ‘Hours Allocated Total’ field from under ‘Resource’

Step 31: Drag it over to the ‘Value’ section

Step 32: The final piece of this report will be the Gantt chart, but we’re going to need to import that as it doesn’t come with the base PowerBI visualizations. To do this, select the ellipsis icon under ‘Visualizations’

Step 33: Select the ‘Import from marketplace’ option

Step 34: Select the search bar and type in ‘Gantt’

Step 35: Select the ‘Add’ button for the first option simply titled ‘Gantt’

Step 36: Select the ‘OK’ button to confirm the import

Step 37: Now select ‘Gantt 2.2.3’ from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 38: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘project task name’

Step 39: Click and hold on the ‘Project Task Name’ field

Step 40: Drag it over to the ‘Task’ section

Step 41: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘start date’

Step 42: Click and hold on the ‘Start Date’ field

Step 43: Drag it over to the ‘Start Date’ section

Step 44: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘project task duration estimate hours’

Step 45: Click and hold on the ‘Project Task Duration Estimate Hours’ field

Step 46: Drag it over to the ‘Duration’ section

Step 47: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘percent complete decimal’

Step 48: Click and hold on the ‘Percent Complete Decimal’ field

Step 49: Drag it over to the ‘% Completion’ section

Step 50: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘cost type’

Step 51: Click and hold on the ‘Cost Type’ field

Step 52: Drag it over to the ‘Tooltips’ section

Step 53: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘project short name’

Step 54: Select the arrow to open the ‘Filters’ pane

Step 55: Click and hold on the ‘Project Short Name’ field

Step 56: Drag it over to the ‘Filters on this page’ area

Step 57: Select the search bar and type in ‘2017 HR Data Warehouse’

Step 58: Select the ‘2017 HR Data Warehouse’ option

Step 59: Select the ‘Collapse’ arrow to close the ‘Filter’

Step 60: Select the ‘Expand/collapse pane’ to close the ‘Filters’ pane

Step 61: Now that we’ve finished the report, we can see the visualization of the data presented in the Gantt chart
