How to Build a SolarWinds Dashboard for Errors and Discards in Excel
This guide will go through the basics of utilizing the errors and discards of a set of devices. Using filters, we will be able to find the devices with the most errors and discards, see the percentage of errors and discards, as well as other useful metrics.

Step 1: To begin, select a database
Step 2: Select your multidimensional database (MDB)
Step 3: Now select the ‘NPM’ cube
Step 4: Now click the ‘Next >’ button to proceed
Step 5: Now click on the checkbox for ‘Always attempt to use this file to refresh data’
Step 6: Now click on the ‘Finish’ button to leave the Data Connection Wizard
Step 7: Now click ‘OK’ to finish importing the data
Step 8: To begin putting data into the PivotTable, click on the search field and type in ‘caption’
Step 9: Click on the ‘Caption’ field that’s under the ‘Nodes’ section
Step 10: Click on the ‘Clear Search’ button so we can find another field
Step 11: Now click on the search bar and type in ‘if name’
Step 12: Click on the ‘If Name’ field to add it to the table
Step 13: Now click on the ‘Clear Search’ button
Step 14: Now click on the search bar and type in ‘interface type description’
Step 15: Now we need to make a filter, so click and hold on ‘Interface Type Description’
Step 16: Drag it down into the ‘Filters’ section
Step 17: Click on the ‘All’ dropdown so we can make some filters
Step 18: Now click on the ‘+’ symbol next to ‘All’ so we can see all the available filters
Step 19: Click on the ‘Select Multiple Items’ checkbox so we can pick the filters
Step 20: Now click the checkbox next to ‘All’, because we want most of the filters to be deselected
Step 21: Now we’ll select some filters. First, ‘PPP’
Step 22: Now click on ‘PPP Multilink Bundle’
Step 23: Click on ‘Serial’ to finish
Step 24: Click on ‘OK’ now to apply the filters
Step 25: Click on the ‘Clear Search’ button so we can make another search
Step 26: Click on the search bar and type in ‘interface quality’
Step 27: Click the ‘Outbound Discards’ field
Step 28: Click ‘Inbound Errors’ as well
Step 29: Click on the ‘Clear Search’ button
Step 30: Click on the search bar and type in ‘percentage of interface discards overall’
Step 31: Click on the ‘Percentage of Interface Discards Overall’
Step 32: Click on the dropdown list for ‘Row Labels’
Step 33: Right-click on one of the fields now so we can collapse table
Step 34: Click on ‘Expand/Collapse > Collapse Entire Field’
Step 35: Now click on the dropdown list next to ‘Row Labels’
Step 36: Now to click ‘Value Filters > Top 10’
Step 37: Click on the dropdown list for the ‘by’ section
Step 38: Select ‘Percentage of Interface Discards Overall’
Step 39: Click on the ‘OK’ button to finish applying the filter
Step 40: Now the devices with the most discards and errors are presented to the user
