How to Build an Incident Management Report for Simple Forecasting With Excel
In this article you will use Excel to create a dashboard that makes use of simple forecasting techniques. This dashboard will have drill-down capabilities and provide you with important metrics that will increase the understanding of incident management.

Step 1: To begin, select the database to use
Step 2: Select you multidimensional database (MDB)
Step 3: Scroll down list of cubes and select the ‘Incident Management Cube’
Step 4: You can change the name under ‘File Name’ if you’d like, but we’re just going to select ‘Finish’
Step 5: Select ‘OK’ in the pop-up
Step 6: Under the ‘PivotTable Fields’ select the search field and type in ‘Closed’
Step 7: Select search field and type in ‘Submit Date.Month’
Step 8: Select search field and type in ‘Submit Date.Month’
Step 9: Now click and drag ‘Submit Date.Month’
Step 10: Drag it down in ‘Rows’ field
Step 11: Now click the ‘Clear Search’ button
Step 12: Now click the search field and type in ‘Hierarchy – Product’
Step 13: Now click and hold ‘Hierarchy – Product Categorization’
Step 14: Drag it down into the ‘Columns’ field
Step 15: Now click on the ‘Analyze’ tab at the top
Step 16: Now click on the ‘PivotChart’ icon
Step 17: Select ‘OK’ in the pop-up to select the Clustered Column chart
Step 18: Now that we have the chart, we can resize it to make it easier to see
Step 19: Now select ‘Quick Layout’ to change the arrangement of the chart
Step 20: Select ‘Layout 5’
Step 21: Now click the ‘Clear Search’ button in the search bar
Step 22: Now click on the search bar and type in ‘Submit Date.Quarter’
Step 23: Now click and hold ‘Submit Date.Quarter’
Step 24: Now drag it down into the ‘Filters’ field
Step 25: Now we need to clear away some of the dates with little data by using the filter we just added. Select the slider at the bottom at the chart and move all the way to the left
Step 26: Select the filter up in the top left corner
Step 27: Select the ‘+’ symbol next to ‘All’ to open up the folder containing all the quarters we want to filter
Step 28: Click the selection box next to each quarter you want to filter out. We’re going to start with ‘Quarter 1, 2015’
Step 29: And select all the quarters up to ‘Quarter 1, 2013’
Step 30: Select ‘OK’
Step 31: Now click on a blue bar so we can add a trendline
Step 32: Now right click and go down to ‘Add Trendline…’
Step 33: Now we can click on the ‘Close’ button in the top left corner of ‘Format Trendline’
Step 34: Now we’re going to repeat the process to add one more trendline. Select one of the orange bars now.
Step 35: Then right-click and select ‘Add Trendline…’
Step 36: Now click on the title so we can change it to something more appropriate
Step 37: Type in ‘Incidents by Category & Month’
Step 38: Now click on the ‘Close’ box up in the top left corner of the ‘Format Plot Area’
Step 39: Let’s also use the ‘Close’ button in the left corner of ‘PivotChart Fields’ so we can see the whole chart
Step 40: Now we have the whole chart, and we know how to filter out values we don’t want
