How to Build an Incident Management Report for Live Relative Date Filtering in Excel

In this article, you will use Excel to create a small chart. The chart will have dynamic date filtering that refreshes without extra work or coding. Using data stored in a non-local server, we can ensure that the data doesn’t remain static

To learn more about Northcraft, take a look at our Resources page.

This video provides step-by-step instruction, or you can follow the steps listed here.

Step 1: To begin, click on the drop-down list under ‘Select the database that contains the data you want’

Step 2: For this example, we’re going to use the ‘ITIL Metric for ITSM 4075 – RemDash’ multidimensional database (MDB)

Step 3: Select ‘Incident Management Cube’

Step 4: Click the ’Next >’ button to move on

Step 5: Click on the checkbox that says ‘Always attempt to use this file to refresh data’, and then click the ‘Finish’ button

Step 6: Click the ‘OK’ button on this pop-up to finish importing the data

Step 7: Now click on the search field and type in ’closed incidents’

Step 8: Now click and hold on the ‘Closed Incidents’ field

Step 9: Drag the field down into the ‘Values’ area

Step 10: Now click on the ‘Clear Search’ button so we can enter another query

Step 11: Now click on the search field and type in ‘submit date.calender date’

Step 12: Now click and hold on the ‘Submit Date.Calender Date’ field

Step 13: Now drag the field down into the ‘Rows’ area

Step 14: Now we’re going to specify the date period for the chart. Click on the dropdown arrow to the right of ‘Row Labels’

Step 15: Now select ‘Date Filters > All Dates in the Period > Quarter 4’

Step 16: Now we’ve set up our chart to relatively filter by date without having to constantly keep it up updated.
