This guide has been designed to provide basic information regarding the Northcraft Analytical Application for IT. Here are some things to remember:

Analytical Application for IT Reporting
Before You Begin
This document describes how to create reports from your IT Support & Operations data using the Analytical Application for IT ad-hoc reporting tool.
First, we will show you how to connect Power BI™ to Northcraft (multi-dimensional SSAS data source) on the server.
There are two steps you need to accomplish to create your first report:
- Establish a connection to SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) with the Northcraft BI Solution i.e. Incident Management, and access the SSAS server
- Create a report with basic visualizations.
There are prerequisites that must be fulfilled prior to using the reporting tool so please review the
The reporting instructions assume you are proficient with PivotTables. If not, please refer to Excel PivotTable under Prerequisites.
The following two prerequisites must be fulfilled prior to following the reporting instructions
- You must be granted rights (typically Active Directory) on the Analytical Application for IT SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) server. Please contact your Administrator for this access.
- If you are using a version prior to Excel 2013, please let us know, as the features may differ slightly.

Connecting Power BI™ To A Data Source
Establish a Connection from Power BI™ to Northcraft

Step 1: First, open Power BI™ desktop
Step 2: Next, select ‘Get data’
Step 3: Select the applicable database
Step 4: Select ‘Connect’
Step 5: In the dialogue box under ‘Server’ type: <yourservername>
Step 6: Select ‘OK’

Creating A Report With Basic Visualizations In Power BI™
Step 1: Open Power BI™ and a new worksheet will open up. If you need to establish a connection, follow steps 1 through 6 above.
Step 2: In this first example, you will create a Tree Map widget. Search ‘total’ in the fields menu and select ‘Incidents Total’.
Step 3: Select ‘Treemap’ from the visualizations field
Step 4: Search ‘group’ under the ‘Fields’ menu and go down to select ‘Assignment Group’ under INC – Incident Management
Step 5: Drag the field out to make it more visible by using the bottom left corner of the widget
Step 6: In this second section, we will create a table widget. Open a new ‘Table’ visualization
Step 7: Select ‘Short Description’ from under INC – Incident Management in the ‘Fields’ menu
Step 8: Drag the selection into the table
Step 9: Go to ‘Import a custom visual’ under the ‘visualizations’ menu
Step 10: Select ‘Import from the marketplace’
Step 11: Search for the Word Cloud and select ‘Add’
Step 12: Select ‘OK’ in the Import custom visual window
Step 13: Select ‘WordCloud’ under the ‘Visualizations’ menu
Step 14: Finished!
While creating these visualizations, try and keep this order in mind:
- Drag and drop applicable measures and dimensions into the needed fields
- Select the desired visualization
