How to Build an Incident Management Dashboard for Incidents Per Day in PowerBI


In this article, we will make a report to examine the metric incidents per day. By using a scatter chart, we’ll be able to see a timeline with the change of incidents per day over time. We’ll also create several slicers to allow us to dynamically filter the report.

Step 1: To begin, select the multidimensional database (MDB) titled ‘AMITSM – ServiceNow – Bubble’

Step 2: Select the ‘INC – Incident Management’ cube

Step 3: Select the ‘OK’ button

Scatter Chart

Step 4: Select the ‘Scatter chart’ widget from under the ‘Visualizations’ section

Step 5: Drag the edges of the chart to resize it and make the data easier to see

Step 6: Select the search field and type in ‘configuation item’

Step 7: Click and hold on the ‘Configuration Item’ field

Step 8: Drag it over into the ‘Legend’ area

Step 9: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘Incidents Per Day’

Step 10: Now click and hold on the ‘Incidents per Day – Rolling 7’ field

Step 11: Drag the field over into the ‘X Axis’ area

Step 12: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘percentage of incidents priority high or critical’

Step 13: Click and hold the ‘Percentage of Incidents Priority High Or Critical’ field

Step 14: Drag it over to the ‘Y Axis’ area

Step 15: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘incidents total’

Step 16: Click and hold on the ‘Incidents Total’ field

Step 17: Drag it over to the ‘Size’ area

Step 18: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘date.value’

Step 19: Click and hold on the ‘Date.Value’ section from under ‘Time – Opened Date’

Step 20: Drag it over to the ‘Play Axis’ area

Step 21: Scroll down in the ‘Fields’ section and select the dropdown arrow next to ‘Configuration Item’

Step 22: Select the dropdown arrow next to ‘Basic filtering’

Step 23: Select the ‘Top N’ option

Step 24: Select the text field next to ’Top’ and type in a number to use as a filter. We’ll use the top ‘15’

Step 25: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘incidents total’

Step 26: Click and hold on the ‘Incidents Total’ field

Step 27: Drag the field over into the ‘By-value’ section

Step 28: Select ‘Apply filter’ to submit the changes

Step 29: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘Assignment Group’

Step 30: Click and hold on the ‘Assignment Group’ option

Step 31: Drag the selection over into the ‘Report level filters’ area and then select the dropdown arrow to open up the filter

Step 32: Select the ‘Select all’ checkbox to turn

Step 33: Select the checkbox next to the empty space, because we’ll want to exclude the data where the Assignment Group isn’t specified

Step 34: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘date.value’

Step 35: Now click and hold the ‘Date.Value’ field from under the ‘Time – Opened Date’ section

Step 36: Drag it into the ‘Filters’ section

Step 37: Select the dropdown chart under the ‘Filter type’ section

Step 38: Select the ‘Advanced filtering’ option

Step 39: Select the dropdown arrow under ‘Show items when the value . . .’

Step 40: Select the ‘is before’ option

Step 41: Select the date section where it says ‘M/d/yyyy’ and type in ‘8/1/2017’

Step 42: Select ‘Apply filter’ to submit the changes

Step 43: We’re also going to drag the chart into the bottom right corner

Step 44: Drag on the corner of the widget again to resize it

Clustered Bar Chart

Step 45: Now select the ‘Clustered bar chart’ option from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 46: Drag the new chart over above the scatter chart

Step 47: Drag the edges of the chart to resize it and make it easier to see

Step 48: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘hierarchy – assignee’

Step 49: Click and hold on the ‘Hierarchy – Assignee’ field

Step 50: Drag it over to the ‘Axis’ section

Step 51: Select the search field, delete the last filter, and type in ‘incidents per day’

Step 52: Click and hold the ‘Incidents Per Day’ field

Step 53: Drag it over to the ‘Value’ section

KPI

Step 54: Now select the ‘KPI’ option from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 55: Drag the edges of the chart to resize it

Step 56: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘incidents per day’

Step 57: Click and hold the ‘Incidents per Day – Rolling 7’ option

Step 58: Drag it over to the ‘Indicator’ section

Step 59: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘months’

Step 60: Click and hold on the ‘Months’ field

Step 61: Drag it over to the ‘Trend axis’ area

Step 62: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in

Step 63: Click and hold on ‘Incidents per Day – Rolling 365’

Step 64: Drag it over to the ‘Target goals’ section

Slicer

Step 65: Now to add a bunch of slicers that will allow us to freely filter the chart. To start, select the ‘Slicer’ option from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 66: Drag the edges of the slicer to resize it

Step 67: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘opened date’

Step 68: Select the ‘Date.Value’ field

Slicer

Step 69: Select another ‘Slicer’

Step 70: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘category’

Step 71: Click and hold on the ‘Category’ field from under ‘Classification’

Step 72: Drag it over into the ‘Field’ option

Step 73: Select the small dropdown arrow in the top right corner of the slicer

Step 74: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option

Slicer

Step 75: Select the ‘Slicer’ option from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 76: Drag the edges of the slicer to resize it

Step 77: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘configuration item’

Step 78: Click and hold the ‘Configuration Item’ section

Step 79: Drag it over to the ‘Field’ section

Step 80: Select the small dropdown arrow in the top right corner of the slicer

Step 81: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option

Slicer

Step 82: Select the ‘Slicer’ from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 83: Once again, drag the edges of the chart to resize it

Step 84: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘assigned support group’

Step 85: Click and hold on the ‘Assigned Support Group’ field

Step 86: Drag it over to the ‘Field’ section

Step 87: Select the small dropdown arrow in the top right corner of the chart

Step 88: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option

Slicer

Step 89: Once again, select the ‘Slicer’ option

Step 90: Click the edges of the slicer again to resize it

Step 91: Select the search option, delete the last query, and type in ‘assigned support company’

Step 92: Select the ‘Assignment Support Company’ field from under ‘Personnel’

Step 93: Drag it over to the ‘Field’ section

Step 94: Select the small dropdown arrow in the top right corner of the slicer

Step 95: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option

Slicer

Step 96: Select the ‘Slicer’ option again

Step 97: Drag the edge of the chart to resize

Step 98: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘assigned support organization’

Step 99: Click and hold on the ‘Assigned Support Organization’ field

Step 100: Drag it over to the ‘Field’ section

Step 101: Select the small dropdown corner in the top right corner of the slicer

Step 102: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option

Slicer

Step 103: Finally, select one more ‘Slicer’

Step 104: Don’t forget to drag the edges of the chart to resize

Step 105: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘assignment group’

Step 106: Click and hold on the ‘Assignment Group’ field

Step 107: Drag it over to the ‘Field’ section

Step 108: Select the small dropdown arrow in the top right corner of the slicer

Step 109: Select the ‘Dropdown’ option

Step 110: Now that we’ve finished, we can use the different slicers to focus on different data in the report

Step 111: We can also select the play button in the bottom right corner of the scatter chart to see a timeline of the incidents per day

Step 112: Now that we’ve finished, we have a full and presentable analysis of the incidents per day metric, complete with dynamic slicers
