Basic Overview


In this article, we will build a report to serve as a template for report building in general. We’ll be going through the creation of a bar chart, pie chart, treemap, and table to illustrate the creation process.

Or you can follow these steps:

Step 1: To begin, select the ‘AMISTM – ServiceNow – Bubble’ multidimensional database (MDB)

Step 2: Select the ‘INC – Incident Management’ cube

Step 3: Select the ‘OK’ button

Step 4: First, we’re going to add some report level filters. Select the search bar and type in ‘assignment group’

Step 5: Click and hold on the ‘Assignment Group’ field

Step 6: Drag it over to the ‘Filter on all pages’ section

Step 7: Select the checkbox for ‘Select all’

Step 8: Select the empty checkbox under ‘Select all’ to filter out the empty fields

Step 9: Select the ‘Collapse’ field

Step 10: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘date.value’

Step 11: Click and hold on the ‘Date.Value’ field from under ‘Time – Opened Date’

Step 12: Drag it over to the ‘Filters on all pages’ section

Step 13: Select the dropdown chart under ‘Filter type’

Step 14: Select the ‘Advanced filtering’ option

Step 15: Select the dropdown under ‘Show items when the value:’

Step 16: Select the ‘is before’ option

Step 17: Select the date text field under the last and enter ‘8/1/2019’

Step 18: Select the ‘Apply filter’ button

Step 19: Select the ‘Collapse’ for the ‘Date.Value’ filter

Step 20: Select the arrow at the top to collapse the ‘Filter’ pane

Line and stacked column chart

Step 21: Now to begin building the report, select the ‘Line and stacked column chart’ from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 22: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘opened date’

Step 23: Click and hold on the ‘Months’ field

Step 24: Drag it over to the ‘Shared axis’ section

Step 25: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘incidents total’

Step 26: Click and hold the ‘Incidents Total’ field

Step 27: Drag it over to the ‘Column values’ section

Step 28: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘incidents resolved’

Step 29: Click and hold on the ‘Incidents Resolved’

Step 30: Drag it over to the ‘Column values’ section

Step 31: Drag the edges of a widget to resize it, and click and drag it around the report area to move it. We’ll move widgets around in-between steps from now on

Step 32: Select the ‘Pie chart’ from under ‘Visualizations’

Pie Chart

Step 33: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘categorization’

Step 34: Select the ‘Categorization – Hierarchy’ field

Step 35: Remove the ‘Subcategory’ field

Step 36: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘incidents total’

Step 37: Click and hold on the ‘Incidents Total’ field

Step 38: Drag it over to the ‘Values’ section

Treemap

Step 39: Select the ‘Treemap’ from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 40: Click and hold on the ‘Incidents Total’ field again

Step 41: Drag it over to the ‘Values’ section

Step 42: Select the search bar, delete the last query, and type in ‘assigned to’

Step 43: Click and hold on the ‘Assigned To’ field of the ‘Hierarchy – Assignee’ field

Step 44: Drag it over to the ‘Group’ field

Step 45: We’re going to delete the other parts of the hierarchy to leave only the ‘Assigned To’ field

Table

Step 46: Select the ‘Table’ option from under ‘Visualizations’

Step 47: Select the ‘Hierarchy – Assignee’ field set to fill out the table

Step 48: Select the search field, delete the last query, and type in ‘short description’

Step 49: Select the ‘Short Description’ field

Step 50: Select the arrow to close the ‘Visualizations’ page

Step 51: Now select the arrow to close the ‘Fields’ pane

Step 52: Now for a quick demo of themes in PowerBI. Select the ‘Home’ tab at the top of the page

Step 53: Select the ‘Switch Theme’ button

Step 54: We’ll select the ‘City park’ theme

Step 55: Now we’ve finished building the report and gone through a short demo for changing the theme through the report. This guide should serve as a useful guide to building reports in general
