How to Build an Events and Configuration Items Mashup Report in PowerBI


This article will show you how to make a dashboard with two different kinds of data, Event and Configuration items. By mixing the data we import in this way, we’ll be able to analyze it with unique models that can tell us new things about the data.

Step 1: To begin, we’re going to click on the ‘Import’ option for out data, unlike the typical “Connect Live” option.  This is because we are doing Client-side mashup, which is a one-time “throw-away” analysis, unlike our multi-dimensional server side mashups which are native to the platform.  In other words, you can use this feature to experiment with the permanent mash-ups that you would like to implement long-term!

Step 2: Now click on the ‘OK’ button

Step 3: Click on the multidimensional database (MDB) for ‘ITIL Metric for ITSM 4075’

Step 4: Now click on the folder labeled ‘CMDB Management’

Step 5: Select the ‘CMDB Management’ cube

Step 6: Select the ‘CMDB’ folder

Step 7: Scroll down and select the ‘Measures’ folder

Step 8: Now click on the ‘Average CI Age’ KPI

Step 9: Click on the ‘Value’ field

Step 10: Scroll down a bit to click on ‘CMDB’

Step 11: Click on the ‘Computer System’ folder inside

Step 12: Finally, click on ‘DNS Host Name’

Step 13: Click on the ‘Load’ button to finish importing these fields into Power BI

Step 14: Now we’re ready to begin our mashup. Click on the ‘File’ tab at the top of the page to begin importing more data

Step 15: Click on ‘Get Data > Analysis Services’

Step 16: Type in the server you want to use. For this example, we will continue using ‘https://public.ncanlytics.com’. Then click on the ‘OK’ button to confirm our selection

Step 17: Now click on the ‘ITIL Metric for ITSM 4075 folder’

Step 18: Inside, click on the ‘NCA_EM_WS’ folder

Step 19: Now click on the ‘Event Management’ folder

Step 20: Click on the ‘Event Management’ cube

Step 21: Now click on the ‘Event Measure’ folder

Step 22: Click on the ‘Event Counts’ folder

Step 23: Click on the ‘Events Critical’ field

Step 24: Scroll down now to select ‘Hierarchy – Host’

Step 25: Now click on the ‘Load’ button to finish importing all the data

Step 26: Now that we have all the values we’ll need; I’ll quickly open the ‘Event Management’ folder under the ‘Fields’ section so we can access our selections later.

Model

Step 27: Now click on the ‘Modeling’ tab at the top of the page

Step 28: Click on the ‘Manage Relationships’ icon

Step 29: Click the ‘New’ button in this window

Step 30: Click on the drop-down chart under ‘Select tables and columns that are related’

Step 31: Select ‘CMDB Management’

Step 32: Click on ‘CMDB.DNS Host Name’ on the top row

Step 33: And click on ‘Event Dimensions.Component Host’ in the bottom row

Step 34: Now click on the ‘OK’ button

Step 35: Now click on the ‘Close’ button

Step 36: Now click on the ‘CMDB.DNS Host Name’ field

Step 37: Now click on the ‘Value’ field

Step 38: Click on the ‘Events Critical’ field

Step 39: Now I’m going to open up the field a bit more so we can see all the data

Step 40: Now we can see all the data we’ve brought into the mashup. This technique lets us compare different kinds of data in the same report, and it had many useful applications
