How to Build a Configuration Management Dashboard in PowerBI


This article will show you how to make a dashboard built to make use of configuration management. By connecting the parts of the dashboard and using real-time data, we are able to show the uses of the data in a way that is both useful and dynamic

Step 1: To begin, click on the multidimensional database (MDB) for ‘ITIL Metric for ITSM 4075 – RemDash’

Step 2: Now click on the ‘CMDB Management’ cube

Step 3: Click ‘OK’ to load the data into Power BI

Step 4: Now to begin building the dashboard, click on the search bar and type in ‘total’

Step 5: Click on the ‘Cis Total’ field under the ‘Counts’ folder

Card

Step 6: We’re going to change the widget by clicking on the ‘Card’ visualization

Step 7: After resizing the card to whatever size best fits your dashboard, click on the search bar again and delete ‘total’

Step 8: Click on the ‘CMDB (Measures) folder at the top of the list of ‘Fields’ to open it up

Step 9: Now click on the ‘Average CI Age’ KPI to open it

Step 10: Click anywhere on the dashboard to deselect our last card. It is always important to know which widget is selected so we don’t accidentally add data to a place where it isn’t appropriate

Step 11: Click on the ‘Value’ field to add it to our dashboard in a new widget

Card

Step 12: By default, the data is brought in as a chart, so click the ‘Card’ visualization again.

KPI

Step 13: Click on the ‘KPI’ visualization to bring it into our dashboard

Step 14: Click on the ‘Percentage of Cis Not Yet Deployed’ KPI

Step 15: Now click on the ‘Value’ signal

Step 16: Also click on the ‘Goal’ field

Step 17: Click on the ‘Create Date’ section to bring in one more parameter

Step 18: Click on the ‘Year’ field

Step 19: Scroll up to open the ‘CMDB Management Overall’ KPI

Step 20: After deselecting the KPI in the dashboard, click on the ‘Value’ field

Card

Step 21: Click on the ‘Card’ visualization

Line and clustered column chart

Step 22: After rearranging the chart and deselecting the card, click on a ‘Line and clustered column chart’ visualization

Step 23: Click on the search bar and type in ‘total’

Step 24: Click on the ‘CIs Total’ field under the ‘Counts’ folder

Step 25: Click on the search bar and delete ‘total’

Step 26: Now scroll down to the ‘Create Date’ folder and select the ‘Month’ field

Step 27: Now we can click on the scroll bar on the bottom of the chart to get a good view of the data

Step 28: Under the ‘Visualizations’ section scroll down into the ‘Filters’ section

Step 29: Now click and hold on the ‘Year’ field so we can use it as a filter in the chart

Step 30: Drag it over into the ‘Page level filters’

Step 31: Now in the new filter section click on the ‘Calendar 2014’ selection so we can filter the chart to only show values from 2014

Step 32: Now click on the ‘Percentage of CIs Not Yet Deployed’ KPI

Step 33: Click and hold on the ‘Value’ field, while still having the chart selected

Step 34: Drag the selection over into the ‘Line values’ section to add a line to the chart

Treemap

Step 35: Now click on the ‘Treemap’ option to bring it into the dashboard

Step 36: Now I’m going to rearrange the dashboard to keep everything neat

Step 37: Now to fill in the Treemap click on the search bar and type in ‘total’

Step 38: Now click on the search bar again and delete ‘total’

Step 39: Now go down to the ‘Create Date’ section

Step 40: Now click on the ‘Month’ field to add it to the treemap

Step 41: Click on the search bar again and type in ‘product name’

Step 42: Click on the ‘Product Name’ field under ‘Product Categorization’ to bring it into the treemap

Table

Step 43: Now click on the ‘Table’ icon under the ‘Visualizations’ section

Step 44: Now click on ‘Hierarchy – Product Categorization’ to fill in the table

Step 45: Now that the dashboard’s finished, we can click on bars in the chart and see the data change

Step 46: Now we can see all the different uses for the configuration management dashboard
